UK clinical trial regulations come into force

New UK clinical trial regulations came into force on 28 April 2026, introducing changes intended to make research faster, more transparent, and easier to set up.

The reforms were announced by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency and the Health Research Authority. For the first time, registering clinical trials and publishing summary results will become a legal requirement.

The new rules also introduce faster routes for some lower-risk trials, quicker assessment of certain trial changes, and a combined review process for ethics and regulatory approval. The aim is to reduce duplication and help research move forward more efficiently while keeping safety and oversight in place.

The government says clinical trial set-up times have already fallen, with commercial trial timelines reduced over the past year. Faster set-up may help patients access new treatments sooner, particularly where delays have previously slowed research progress.

For the public, one of the most important changes is transparency. When trials are registered and results are published, it becomes easier to understand what research is taking place, what has been tested, and what the findings show.
